Public presentation of The Discoveries Centre project, a TEAMING between 4 Portuguese Universities (University of Minho, Porto, Aveiro, Lisboa and Nova de Lisboa) and University College London (UCL)

The Discoveries Centre is an initiative that aims to create a large multicampi Centre of Excellence in Portugal in the field of Regenerative and Precision Medicine. It aims to focus on multidisciplinary research that will be translated into innovative methods to be applied in the prevention and treatment of Musculoskeletal, Neuro-degenerative and Cardiovascular disorders.

This new centre is a result of a partnership, under a TEAMING process, between five Portuguese Universities (Universidade do Minho, Universidade do Porto, Universidade de Aveiro, Universidade de Lisboa and Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and a world leading university in the Health Sciences field, University College London (UCL), from the United Kingdom. These six universities bring together a strong and recognized activity in the research field. The project has the support of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), coordinator of the proposal, and several Regional Authorities (CCDRs).

The partnership will present an application to the European Commission for support in the launch of the Centre, which will allow the establishment of one of the largest and most productive research centres based in Portugal. This will have a significant structuring effect in the Portuguese Science. It is predicted that the Centre will have access to base-funding of a minimum of 60 MEuros for the first 7 years of activity, to which its own funds obtained through tenders and contracts will be added.

With a strong translational vision, this new Centre of Excellence will contribute to the Biomedical Sector’s growth and competitiveness, thus fostering economic growth in several levels. For more information about The Discoveries Centre, which will have headquarters in Minho – AvePark, and campi in Porto, Aveiro, Lisbon and London.
