In October 2008, Anabela Alves Pinto, researcher from the 3B’s Research Group, obtained an important award attributted by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3, United Kingdom) on the scope of the world competition for the Best Oral Presentation organized by the Institute, addressed to young investigators. As one of the researchers in the final, Anabela managed to get the 2nd place in this world level competition with the work entitled Valorization of renewable marine residues: Converting natural biopolymers into potential biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. The main goal of this work is to study the abilities and possible applications of renewable marine residues as biomaterials and scaffolds for tissue engineering
