Natural deep eutectic solvents (DES) are based on sugars, amino acids or organic acids which are typically solid at room temperature but upon combination at a particular molar fraction they present a high melting point depression than those of the individual components, becoming liquids at room temperature. DES are envisaged to play a major role on different chemical engineering processes in the future, playing a significant role towards the development of greener and sustainable processes. Nonetheless, there is a significant lack of knowledge on fundamental and basic research on these systems, which is hindering their industrial applications. Thus, it is important to extend the knowledge on these systems, boosting their root from the fundamental to practical applications which go beyond chemical or materials engineering and cover a wide range of fields. In this communication we will explore the NADES potential as solvents for extraction of natural anti-oxidants from cork and biopolymers from marine algae, namely fucoidan from Bifurcaria bifurcata. Furthermore we will present some results on pharmaceutical applications, in which DES, as therapeutic systems may be seen as powerful enhancers of the bioavailability of pharmaceutical active ingredients (API’s), increasing significantly both solubility and permeability of the API’s. In a balance between frontier and application research our results demonstrate that unravelling the field of deep eutectic solvents may lead to the development of new applications, such as cosmetics, which have up-to-date not been extensively reported in the literature.
